One Boy's Dream To A Statewide Mission

Adaptive Sports Ohio was founded in 2009 by Chief Executive Officer, Lisa Followay. The organization was inspired by Lisa’s son, Casey (pictured), who was born with Spina Bifida, and always wanted to play sports.

Adaptive sports gave Casey the chance to play like his peers. It benefited him immensely. I knew that others with disabilities should have the opportunity to gain those benefits as well and that is why Adaptive Sports Ohio was born. Our vision is that youth and adults across Ohio should have access to sport in their communities and schools. No one should be denied the chance to play,” said Lisa.

About OIAS:

Established by Adaptive Sports Ohio, Ohio Interscholastic Adaptive Sports (OIAS) is the governing body for interscholastic wheelchair basketball. OIAS oversees all aspects of interscholastic wheelchair basketball, including the rules, scheduling, and post season.

The interscholastic wheelchair basketball league exists for the sole purpose of providing students with physical disabilities an opportunity to play and benefit from interscholastic sports.

The interscholastic wheelchair basketball season follows the OHSAA basketball timeline and adheres to NFHS and OHSAA basketball rules, with slight modifications. Wheelchair basketball games follow the standard high school format, featuring five players from each team on the court, along with coaches, a scorekeeper, spectators, and a minimum of two officials.

Through OIAS, student athletes with physical disabilities gain the full, authentic high school sports experience. They have the opportunity to:

  • Wear their school colors with pride and compete against rival schools.
  • Ride the team bus and build lifelong camaraderie with teammates.
  • Earn school recognition, including senior night spotlights, varsity letters, and All-Ohio honors.
  • Compete for a spot in the official State Championship tournament.
